BUNIA – More or less 123 cases of deaths of displaced persons were reported at the Kigonze site in the town of Bunia, capital of the province of Ituri, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, during the year 2023 .

Statistics delivered to Congoforum.be and rtvh.net, Monday January 8, 2024 by the president of this site. According to him, this situation is the result of the lack of food and medical assistance criticized for almost a year.

According to Papy Faustin, the victims are largely made up of children and elderly people. “This lack of assistance also causes prostitution among young girls and women. The children leave the displaced persons camp to find themselves on the streets of the town of Bunia. They are mainly found at the central market begging or stealing goods from merchants,” he adds.

While welcoming the efforts of the Catholic Church which is mobilizing in favor of the displaced, Papy Faustin asks the Congolese government and its partners to come to the rescue of these vulnerable people.

Kigonze is one of four IDP sites in the town of Bunia. With an insufficient number of toilets, it currently accommodates 14,164 people. In 2022, this camp had reported 84 cases of death.
