Ecuador in state of “internal armed conflict” as TV broadcast attacked

The Ecuadorian television station TC was the target of a shocking attack during a live broadcast. Armed individuals interrupted the feed, forcing the staff to lie on the floor while brandishing large guns. Shots and shouting could be heard as the distressing incident unfolded on Tuesday. It is reported that police have since made 13 arrests in connection with the attack.

The attackers, dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, were seen gesturing at the camera with one person yelling “no police”. The live feed eventually cut out, leaving the situation unclear.

In response to this event, President Daniel Noboa declared that 22 gangs are now considered terrorist organizations. The president has stated that the country is currently in a state of “internal armed conflict”. The national police have posted a tweet boasting the capture of several individuals and evidence linked to the crime.

Alina Manrique, the head of news for TC Television, recounted the terrifying experience of having a gun pointed at her during the attack, leaving her in shock and considering leaving the country.

The incident occurred in Guayaquil, a city that has experienced a surge in violence due to narcotrafficking groups operating in the region.

The attack on TC Television is just one in a series of violent events that have occurred in Ecuador recently. President Noboa declared a state of emergency following the kidnapping of at least seven police officers, as well as explosions in various cities and prison inmates taking guards as hostages.

Both the United States and Peru have expressed their concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Ecuador, with the US promising to remain in close contact with President Noboa’s team.

As Ecuador grapples with escalating violence, it has become clear that the country is facing a grave security challenge. The president and the national police are adopting a stern stance on the matter and are aggressively pursuing their efforts to neutralize the criminal organizations. However, these measures have drawn criticism due to concerns regarding human rights and the potential for further violence.

The situation in Ecuador is developing rapidly, with the government vowing not to negotiate with the perpetrators. It is apparent that the country is in dire need of stability and security as the wave of violence continues to engulf the nation.
