Two professionals with extensive experience in the music industry and an engineer are the conductors behind the start-up Meloom, dedicated to online music education. “With the Covid-19 pandemic, musical events were stopped, but people began to talk about mental health and how learning to play an instrument could help while we were confined at home,” recalls Víctor Velasco, with experience as a director in Minimúsica (educational entertainment for family audiences) and in the management and record company Sones.

With the idea of creating a solution to learn to play an instrument remotely, Velasco contacted Iván Jiménez – with experience in finance, strategy, business transformation and operations in companies in the music sector, among other fields – and Juan Placer , computer systems engineer, certified machine learning engineer and analyst and consultant for technology startups. After an initial investment of 120,000 euros and nearly two years of development, the three entrepreneurs founded the startup Meloom in January 2022.

“We are a solution from which anyone can learn to play an instrument from scratch,” explains Jiménez, who says he has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old and has never gone to therapy. “I’m sure the guitar has helped me a lot in this regard,” he says. At the moment Meloom offers guitar, ukulele and cajon classes to its more than 2,000 users throughout the country. “They are mainly from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, but also from more remote areas where it is more difficult to access in-person lessons with a teacher,” indicates the co-founder.

Entrepreneurs have developed their own educational method, with personalized and adaptive learning itineraries thanks to machine learning. “Learning is based on teaching how to play your favorite songs and that is very motivating. Additionally, through an agreement with Unión Musical, we offer instruments to those who do not have them,” adds Jiménez. Another differential feature is the online lessons

with well-known artists, such as Santi Balmes, from Love of

Lesbian.

Based in Barcelona and with a turnover of 70,000 euros, the emerging company is one of the five Spanish startups chosen to participate in the Music Tech Europe Academy. In 2024, the co-founders aim to reach half a million euros in sales, and in the medium term they want to launch their own brand of instruments.
