An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 hit the prefecture of Niigata, in Japan, this Tuesday, 9th, at 5:59 pm, local time (5:59 am, Brasília time). The region is the same one where an earthquake on January 1st caused widespread destruction, resulting in hundreds of deaths and missing people.

A trail of destruction and deaths left by the first earthquake

This latest tremor occurred on the same day that local authorities updated the death toll from the January 1 earthquake, which rose to 202 people – around 300 are still missing.

According to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 517 people were injured.

Thousands of rescuers continue working amid adverse weather conditions to clear blocked roads. They are clearing debris caused by the previous 7.6 magnitude quake and providing aid to nearly 3,500 people who are still trapped in isolated communities.

According to authorities, around 1,600 buildings were damaged – 293 of which were completely destroyed.
