Himachal Pradesh: About 160 students of Government Senior Secondary School, Bagi, under Darrang assembly constituency of Mandi district, are taking classes these days in a temporary tent set up by the school administration in Bagi in the bone-chilling cold.

The buildings of Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) and Government Primary School (GPS), Bagi, were damaged in a flash flood incident in August last year, following which the studies of about 253 students of these two schools were affected.

According to Charan Singh, president of the school management committee, GSSS, Bagi, the villagers had provided two rooms in the village, where students of GPS Bagi were taking classes regularly. However, students of GSSS, Bagi were taking classes in a temporary tent in Bagi as there was no accommodation available in the village to conduct the classes. As a result, these students were facing problems due to lack of school building to conduct classes in these extreme weather conditions.

When asked, students of GSSS, Bagi said that there is an urgent need for construction of a school building in Bagi to hold their classes. He said that students are facing problems due to lack of accommodation.

Devendra Bains, principal of GSSS, Bagi, said the school building was damaged in the floods in August last year. A tent was purchased in September with financial contributions from school teachers and school management committee members. Jai Ram, a local resident, provided the land to set up this tent, where students have been taking their classes since last September.

He said that land has been sanctioned for the construction of a school building in Baghi. Now it is for the state government to decide when the construction of the school building will start.

When contacted, executive deputy director, higher education, Mandi, Amarnath Rana said the department has already submitted a proposal to the state government for construction of school buildings in Baghi. He said that land has been approved from the Forest Department for constructing the school building. The construction work of the school building will be started as soon as the budget is approved by the state government.
