Marcelo Camargo/Agência Brasil – 06/30/2023

Minister Cármen Lúcia, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court)

Minister Cármen Lúcia, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), granted this Tuesday (9) a period of 30 days for the city of Maceió and the mining company Braskem to comment on the compensation agreement valued at R$ 1.7 billion by the damage caused by the extraction of rock salt in the capital of Alagoas.

The minister’s decision was taken to instruct the action in which the government of Alagoas challenges the legality of the agreement, signed in July last year between the company and the municipality of Maceió. The clauses were questioned in the STF after the Alagoas court rejected the annulment of the agreement.

After receiving the statements, the minister must judge the action. There is no deadline for the trial.

The state government claims that the agreement prevents full compensation for those affected by rock salt mining in the state. Furthermore, the government questions sections that authorize the company to become the owner of land and continue to explore the devastated region.

The agreements were signed by Braskem in 2019, 2020 and 2022 with the following bodies: Federal Public Ministry (MPF), Alagoas Public Ministry (MPA), Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU), Alagoas Public Defender’s Office and Maceió city hall.
