Virginia House of Delegates Makes History by Nominating First Black Speaker, Don L. Scott Jr.

History was made in the Virginia House of Delegates when Don L. Scott Jr. (D-Portsmouth) was appointed as the first African American Speaker. The momentous occasion was clearly celebrated, with people from all political affiliations, family members, and even a former disgraced governor, Robert McDonnell, coming together to honor this achievement.

Former governor McDonnell might have seemed insignificant at the ceremony, as his reputation was marred by federal corruption charges while in office. However, it was revealed that a decade ago, it was McDonnell who restored Scott’s voting rights following a drug-related conviction that led to eight years in federal prison.

Following his rehabilitation, Scott went on to become a defense lawyer, win election to the House of Delegates, and now, making history as the first African American Speaker.

The significance of the moment was not lost on anyone. His nomination was emotionally seconded by Del. Luke E. Torian, who highlighted the historical impact of Scott’s appointment after 400 years. Del. Terry L. Austin, who helped second the nomination, emphasized the honor it was to serve alongside Scott.

During his speech, after being sworn in, Scott became emotional, expressing gratitude toward his wife and mother, both of whom supported him during his journey to redemption.

The significance of McDonnell’s presence at the ceremony was noted by many; as he seeks his own redemption, he was seen smiling alongside Scott during the event.

“This is a very special moment,” McDonnell said. “For every young kid that makes a mistake, they can look at Don Scott and say, ‘I’ll never give up. I can still be what I want to be in America.’ ”

The event, filled with themes of redemption, faith, and perseverance, serves as a powerful reminder that with hard work and determination, anyone can reach great heights.
