Last week, police detained a 51-year-old man in Kohtla-Järve suspected of illegally trafficking a large amount of drugs.

Information about alleged drug trafficking in Kohtla-Jarve was received by the police at the beginning of last week, writes DELFI. According to the head of the department for combating drugs and organized crime of the Ida Prefecture, Dmitry Kabanov, the police went to check the information received and during a search in the house of a man known to the police for previous drug-related offenses, they found just over 400 grams of heavy synthetic opioids, amphetamine, tablets ecstasy and almost 5,500 euros in cash.

“On the same day, we detained a 51-year-old man on suspicion of illegal possession of a large quantity of drugs; the drugs found in his house were sent for examination, and the seized funds were classified as criminal income,” Kabanov said.

He added that the batch of substances found in the man’s house is considered large, in particular, a batch of heavy synthetic opioid. “This is the first time in the Idaho region that such a quantity of a heavy synthetic substance has been seized from a street dealer. By doing this, we ensured that the dangerous substance seized from the suspect would not end up on the streets, and the man would no longer be able to make criminal profit from its sale,” Kabanov said.

The police officer emphasized that the identification and capture of drug traffickers of any kind, and especially traffickers of hard and synthetic drugs, is the subject of close attention of the police, since just last year the number of drug-related deaths in the Ida region has doubled. “To prevent deadly substances from reaching the streets, their use and fatal consequences, police officers work every day, and we are very grateful to those who share the same values and report potential criminals,” Kabanov added.

At the court hearing that followed the man’s arrest, the prosecutor’s office petitioned for his detention. The Viru County Court agreed with the position of the prosecutor’s office and sent the man to jail for two months. “The Viru District Prosecutor’s Office asked for the suspect’s detention because there is a real risk that he will continue to sell heavy synthetic substances if he remains free. In addition, the amount of drugs found during the search spoke in favor of the conclusion,” explained Sofia Khristoforova, prosecutor at the Viru District Prosecutor’s Office.

A criminal case was initiated against the man under an article of the Penitentiary Code on illegal drug trafficking on a particularly large scale. If convicted, the man could be sentenced to between 3 and 15 years in prison.
