The US and China, two strategic pillars of Grifols
Grifols, one of the few companies that appeared in a US State Department report leaked by Wikileaks in 2010 as strategic, has had a subsidiary in China since 2010, where it obtained the commercial license as Grifols Pharmaceutical Technology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. in 2016. Headquartered in Shanghai with an office in Beijing, the company covers the mainland China market. In 2019, Grifols acquired 26% of Shanghai RAAS for around €1.68 billion, becoming its second largest shareholder. The operation sought to satisfy the growing demand for human serum albumin, a plasma used to treat liver diseases, taking into account supply limitations due to the strict regulation in the Asian country for donations. Grifols provided its technology and know-how so that Shanghai RAAS could develop the products. And the Chinese firm became the only distributor of blood products and transfusion diagnostic solutions in the Asian giant. Agustí Sala gives all the keys.
