The cultural influence of the science fiction saga Star Trek is so great that it has marked the American space program.

Star Trek began with the adventures of the fictional starship Enterprise. And the first American space shuttle, before the charismatic Columbia, was also called Enterprise for this reason.

However, while Star Trek’s Enterprise flew extensively in space, NASA’s Enterprise ended up serving only flight tests within Earth’s atmosphere. Conditioning the ship so that it could fly into space was too cumbersome, expensive and risky. The best option was to build other shuttles from scratch, preparing them from the beginning for that function.

In any case, science fiction and reality ended up connecting. And so, the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, and members of the cast who played crew members of the fictional Enterprise, were invited to the official presentation of NASA’s Enterprise ship, at the company’s Rockwell factory in Palmdale. , California, on September 17, 1976.
