The MEP and president of the left-wing Place Publique movement declared himself a candidate in September 2023 for the European elections in June 2024. He should, barring any surprises, be designated head of the list of the Socialist Party (PS) in February, as in 2019 Credited with around 10% of the votes in the polls, he recently received the support of Daniel Cohn-Bendit, former environmentalist MP, and the economist Jacques Attali, who previously lined up behind Emmanuel Macron. The formation of a new government criticized for its right-wing on Thursday, January 11, raises hope on the left that a space can open up in view of the June 9 election.

Emmanuel Macron has just appointed Gabriel Attal as Prime Minister and the MEP, leader of the Renew group, Stéphane Séjourné at the Quai d’Orsay. These appointments are made both to counter the National Rally and yourself. What do you think ?
It really doesn’t matter who is Minister of Foreign Affairs because Emmanuel Macron alone defines France’s foreign policy. And yes, the Macronist party campaign began with the nomination of Gabriel Attal. They will try to set up the Attal-Bardella match, but we will not let them kidnap the European election. The stakes of this election are too great to be obscured by a communications plan. The first issue at European level is not Macron or Le Pen, it is who, the Social Democrats or the European People’s Party, will be in the lead and will set the legislative agenda for the next five years. And it’s not the same thing to have Delors or Barroso at the helm! We have five months to debate which Europe we want, at a time when, if Europe cannot come of age, we could lose everything. I remind you that on November 5, the American election may bring Donald Trump to power, who will sabotage the European security architecture and leave us alone…
What assessment do you draw from your mandate?
It completely transformed me! I saw that we could make things happen. On the first day of office, I requested the creation of a special commission on foreign interference, which I subsequently chaired. We have, even before the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, dissected the hybrid war waged against our democracies by the Putin regime and warned of the immense risks that the indolence and unconsciousness of our leaders posed to our nations. This mandate allowed me to move from defending principles to developing concrete policies. These five years have been hit by major crises and the European Parliament has found itself at the heart of history. Between 2019 and 2024, climate catastrophe, pandemic and war have pushed Europe into a new era. We are at a moment when the European Union must choose between becoming a real political power and sinking into nothingness. This is the fight of my life and it’s happening now.
