The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued, on Saturday night (13), a warning of “great danger” regarding the amount of rain in three states. The alert is valid until 10 am on Sunday (14) for sections of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais.

According to the agency, the warning is for rainfall accumulation exceeding 60 millimeters per hour or above 100 millimeters per day. In this case, there is a great risk of flooding, river overflows and landslides in cities with risk areas.

The most affected areas are the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, the north, center and northwest of Rio de Janeiro and the Baixadas, as well as the south of Espírito Santo and Zona da Mata, in Minas Gerais. In total, 63 municipalities are in the area that received the alert.

The Institute’s guidance to residents of these locations is to turn off electrical appliances and the general power supply, observe changes on the slopes and remain in a sheltered place.

Inmet also asks that, in the event of flooding, residents protect their belongings from the water by wrapping them in plastic bags and seek more information from the Civil Defense (telephone 199) and the Fire Department (telephone 193).

Part of Minas, Amazonas, Pará, northern Maranhão, the extreme north of Tocantins, southeast Goiás and Amapá are in an “orange” area, considered “dangerous” for the Institute. In these cases, rainfall can reach 30 and 60 millimeters per hour or 50 and 100 millimeters per day, with intense winds and risks of electricity cuts, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges.

Residents of affected areas are instructed not to take shelter under trees, as there is a risk of falls and electrical discharges, and not to park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs. Electrical appliances and the general power supply can also be turned off.

Most of the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Rondônia, Acre, Maranhão and Tocantins are in an area of ”potential danger”, with intense rainfall, between 20 and 30 millimeters per hour or up to 50 millimeters per day. There is a low risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges. The alert lasts until 10am on Sunday (14), but may be extended depending on weather conditions.
