Elton John, stage clothes, memorabilia and furnishings up for auction: 900 cult objects on sale
Elton John sells 900 items from his former Atlanta penthouse in a series of auctions at Christie’s in New York, culminating in a live session on February 21st at Rockefeller Center, grossing an estimated $10 million. Last autumn the 76-year-old British rock star together with her husband and manager David Furnish sold their American residence for over 7.2 million dollars and now the couple is also selling the collection of works of art and mementos (including stage costumes) that the Peachtree Road apartment guarded.

Highlights include the Yamaha grand piano on which ‘Rocketman’ wrote the hit Broadway shows “Billy Elliot” and “Aida” for $50,000; The portrait of Elton John painted by Julian Schnabel for $300,000; it’s a Banksy triptych from 2017 depicting a masked man throwing a bouquet of flowers for $1.5 million. The iconic glasses sunglasses of the singer, the silver bootsand stage costume in ivory and gold from the 1970s created by textile designer Annie Reavey and the work “Your Song” by Damien Hirst, signed and inscribed “xxx for Elton + David love Damien Thank You”, with an estimated value of 350,000-450,000 dollars.
As a testament to Elton John’s eclectic tastes, his Atlanta apartment featured elaborate Versace wallpaper, fruit of the long-standing friendship between the rock star and the Versace family. The sale includes a group of Versace items, including a selection of vintage Gianni Versace shirts estimated at $4,000 to $6,000, as well as tableware and home furnishings.
During his time in Georgia, Elton John amassed a collection of photographic works by Dorothea Lange, André Kertész, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe. Now these original photos are also going up for auction.
