In this fourth chapter of conversations with Jorge Laborda about the immune system we visit a new step in the cascade of events that take place when a microorganism invades our body. In the first chapter, titled We are surrounded! We discuss how pathogenic microorganisms, whether bacteria, viruses or fungi, overcome the barrier formed by our skin and internal cavities and penetrate the body. In the second chapter, titled: The chemical war of the Immune System, Jorge Laborda talked about what is known as “The complement system”, made up of molecules that engage in a true chemical war against invaders. In the third chapter, titled Alarm, they attack us! We explain how sentinel cells and phagocytes detect bacteria and secrete numerous proteins into the blood that serve to sound the alarm to other phagocytes and attract them to the focus of infection, what is known as the “acute phase” begins. The liver responds by generating proteins that join the action against the attacker and sequester the iron it needs.
In this new chapter of the saga, Jorge Laborda explains what happens when all previous actions are insufficient to stop the infection. Then it is necessary to take more effective measures that require the intervention of specialized squads to fight the enemy. These special and very effective squads are made up of particular cells, called lymphocytes, which go to the site of infection once they have learned to identify the enemy and have been activated and armed in the correct way to eradicate it.
However, these specialized soldiers do not exist in abundance, they must be trained in specific martial arts to fight against that specific enemy that has invaded the body and the training process requires an internal washing of the wound.
