A few days after the announcement of new measures that include price increases for services such as electricity and transportation, many inputs and fuel, President Miguel Díaz-Canel, visiting Artemisa, asked for confidence and assured that the measures will be implemented. They will apply when the country is ready.

During a visit to Bahía Honda, in the aforementioned province, the Cuban president assured that “each measure will be applied when the conditions are created,” so that they have a guarantee in its implementation and so that they can organize the economy.

The president also recalled that the measures have been announced, but none have been applied yet, and therefore “nothing has changed.”

The president’s precision contrasts with the fact that the ministers who have attended the Round Table to announce the new measures have already set a date for them.

For example, it is known that the fuel price increase will come into effect on February 1, and that liquefied gas and energy will see their prices increased in March, according to information from the ministers.

Díaz-Canel once again asks for trust

The first consequences of the measures came even before they were applied: private taxis in Havana have already begun to raise their prices. In the midst of this situation and the debate that the ads have generated, Díaz-Canel took advantage of his visit to ask for “trust” from the Artemiseños with whom he spoke in the streets.

“There is a lot of talk with the economic measures, and I know that this is creating a lot of uncertainty; and above all the counterrevolution is greatly detracting from the measures,” said the president.

“Each measure, even those that have to do with increases in rates or prices, will have treatment for the people who could be most affected,” he assured, and emphasized that there will be “differentiated treatment for the vulnerable.”

Then, he asked to “take all that into account and take into account confidence in the way the Government is going to carry out the measures.”

Díaz-Canel did not explain how those most affected will be “treated,” but he did say that “they are tough measures” that have to be applied because if not, the economy cannot be put in order.

So far, the measures do not include an increase in the island’s minimum and average salary scale, and both on social networks and in the streets, debates indicate that they have been perceived with uncertainty and as an unpleasant surprise.
