The Chairman of Religious Zionism, MK Bezalel Smutrich, wrote a letter to Knesset Speaker Miki Levy requesting that the opening hour of the plenum be postponed, so that Knesset members can attend the funeral of the late Esther Pollard.
As expected, Smutrich’s request was not accepted by the Knesset presidency, since it is not an official or state event (such as the funeral of the late Ora Herzog, for example). The Knesset Speaker’s entourage argued that if MKs want to attend the funeral, there is a possibility of offsetting or arriving late to the plenum.
A letter from Smutritz reads: “Mrs. Esther Pollard’s funeral procession left at 4:00 PM on Mount of Beatitudes in Jerusalem and her family asked the people of Israel to come and pay their last respects to her.”
“The truth is that deserving is the late Esther and deserving is Jonathan Yavdal that Esther will have a state funeral. The contribution of this special couple to the State of Israel and its security and the heavy price they paid in their lives deserves state recognition. The State of Israel will come to pay its last respects to it. “
Smutrich’s letter
“I think it is appropriate to postpone the opening of the Knesset plenum for two hours and allow Knesset members who wish to do so to attend the eulogies and funerals.
“Beyond the technical possibility that postponing the opening time of the plenum will allow Knesset members to participate in the funeral procession, this will be a worthy and dignified symbolic statement to the place that the State of Israel and the Knesset of Israel give to the Pollard couple who contributed so much to their love and devotion.”
In conclusion, he wrote: “I would be happy for you to respond to my request and announce that the Knesset plenum will open today at 18:00.”
