Jallikattu competitions are held in most villages in South Tamil Nadu on the occasion of the three-day Pongal festival. In this, famous jallikattu competitions will be held at 3 places in Madurai district namely Avaniyapuram, Palamedy and Alankanallur.

Jallikattu will be held today (Jan. 15) at Avaniyapuram, tomorrow (Jan. 16), at Palamet and the day after tomorrow (Jan. 17) at the world-famous Alankanallur. For these three days, Madurai will be crowded with festivities.

Avaniyapuram Jallikattu started

The issue related to the participation of all castes in the coordinating committee that has been conducting jallikattu competitions in Madurai Avaniyapuram for 3 years had to go to court. Since no solution has been reached, the district administration is conducting jallikattu competitions in Avaniyapuram as per the court order.

This year is no exception. Based on the case filed by Kalyanasundaram from Avaniyapuram, the court ordered that the district administration and the corporation jointly conduct the Avaniyapuram jallikattu competition this year like last year. The judges also noted that legal action can be taken against persons who are not members of the group recognized by the district administration for causing any disturbance.

Registration of bulls and cowherds participating in Avaniyapuram Jallikattu was held for 2 days. At the end of it, 1,000 bulls and 600 cowherds were given tokens to enter the arena.

As a follow up, the first Jallikattu of the year has opened to rave reviews in Avaniyapuram. Under the leadership of Madurai District Collector Sangeeta, the cowherd players took the jallikattu pledge and Minister Murthy flagged off the competitions and started the competition. 50 people participated in the first round.

A dog that entered the gravel field

A dog came out of nowhere and suddenly entered the field when the third round was going on at Jallikattu in Avaniyapuram. While the bulls were being untied from the gate, the dog lay down in the path where the bulls were running. However, Jallikattu continued without any interruption.

Even when the bulls came roaring from the gate, the dog lay motionless in the field. After about half an hour the dog got up and went away.

Last year’s first prize winner Karthik is injured

A total of 28 people, including a police inspector and a bystander, have been injured so far in the Avaniyapuram jallikattu. 5 people have been referred to Government Rajaji Hospital for further treatment.

Karthik, a young man from Avaniyapuram, who tamed 15 bulls in the Jallikattu, got an eye injury. Doctors are treating the injured youth.

2 cars gifted by Chief Minister, Udayanidhi

A car will be awarded to the best cowherd and the best cow at Avaniyapuram Jallikattu on behalf of Chief Minister M.K.Stalin and Minister Udayanidhi.

Also, Minister Murthy awarded gold coins to the soldiers who captured the cows and those who were not captured.

What are the rules of jallikattu festival committee?

Before the jallikattu competition, the bullfighters and jallikattu bulls will be allowed to enter the arena after a fitness test.

Only jallikattu bulls with government issued tokens will be allowed to be unleashed into the field.

According to the rules announced by the government, the horn or tail of Jallikattu bulls should not be caught. If caught, the player will be given a warning and any such behavior will result in the player being kicked out of the tournament.

Govindarajan of the Alankanallur Jallikattu Committee says that the committee will decide whether the bull or the cowherd won the jallikattu competition, and similarly, the caste names announced by the court will not be mentioned.

On a petition filed by Selvakumar from Madurai in the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court, the judges ordered that the bulls should not be untied during the Jallikattu competition by mentioning the caste name of its owner. The court also ordered to consider the request of the petitioner to take oath of abolition of untouchability.

Minister Murthy also confirmed this. Speaking to reporters in Avaniyapuram, he said, “Based on the court order, only the name of the bull and the name of the town will be mentioned without mentioning the caste name in the jallikattu competition.”

Bulls participating in jallikattu and their owners are allowed only if they come with the permit issued by the district administration.

The owner and assistant accompanying the bulls should not be under the influence of alcohol.

Owners of bulls should not bring knives or sharp weapons to cut the nose of the cow.

Cowherds who have been permitted by the Madurai District Administration to participate in Jallikattu must also bring a photo ID and appropriate medical certificate.

Cowherds participating in Jallikattu should not be under the influence of alcohol for any reason. Legal action will be taken against violators.

If the owners of the house living in front of Jallikattu Wadivasal and nearby allow any person other than the family members residing in the house to watch the Jallikattu performance from the house or from the upper floor, legal action will be taken against the house owner in case of law and order problem.

This year too, I have been training intensively for more than a month to participate in jallikattu competitions and become a better player,” he says.

Continuing, he said, “I belong to Enadi village of Sivagangai district and the youths of my village are also interested in participating in Jallikattu competitions. After the jallikattu protest was held in 2017 and the ban on it was lifted, interest in raising jallikattu bulls and playing in jallikattu competition increased among the youth. In order to formalize this, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced various restrictions and regulations in jallikattu competitions.

Accordingly, cowherds who want to participate in the jallikattu competition should go to the website announced by the Jallikattu bulls government, the owner of the cow, the cowherds must undergo a medical examination and confirm their physical fitness, upload the certificate and make a reservation. Documents will be scrutinized by the government and permission will be given to participate in jallikattu competition.

In this, 2,400 bulls, 1,318 bullocks, 3,677 jallikattu bulls and 1,412 cowherds were registered to participate in Avaniapuram jallikattu.

In addition to these two jallikattu competitions, the world famous Alanganallur jallikattu competition had 6,099 bulls and 1,784 cowherds, a total of 12,176 jallikattu bulls and 4,514 cowherds were booked to participate in these three jallikattu competitions.
