South Korean technology companies led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are planning to invest 622 trillion won ($471 billion) by 2027 in building “the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturing cluster.” Bloomberg writes about this with reference to a statement by South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, which he made today, January 15, at an event at Sungkyunkwan University.

It is planned to create a huge cluster of several dozen enterprises in the vicinity of Seoul. To the existing 21 plants, 13 more enterprises and three research centers will be added. It is expected that by 2030, 7.7 million integrated circuits for semiconductors will be produced here. Currently, South Korea accounts for about 16% of global chip exports.

Many countries are increasing investment in semiconductor production. Last year it was reported that Japan would invest $13 billion to boost local chip manufacturing and development. The United States previously presented a plan to invest $52.7 billion in this area, and the EU has similar plans with investments of €43 billion.
