The clothing sector is the most affected, with a shortfall of 12 billion euros each year, or 5.2% of its turnover, according to the European Union Intellectual Property Office .

Counterfeit products cost the European clothing, cosmetics and toy sectors 16 billion euros and nearly 200,000 jobs each year, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) calculated on Tuesday. Based on data from 2018 to 2021, the EUIPO study estimates that the clothing sector is the most affected, with a shortfall of 12 billion euros each year, or 5.2% of its turnover. Losses in the cosmetics sector have been estimated at 3 billion euros and those in toys at 1 billion.

200,000 jobs lost

Not all of Europe is affected in the same way: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Austria account for half of these shortfalls. Extrapolating from the state of the sectors concerned, the EUIPO estimates the number of jobs lost due to these shortfalls at 200,000, including 40,000 in Germany, 24,000 in Italy and around 15,000 in Spain and the same in France. . But the European agency recognizes that “counterfeiting, like any illegal activity, cannot be precisely measured».

To produce these estimates, the EUIPO therefore constructed a model which is based in part on the amounts of seizures made by the police and the percentage of Europeans who admitted to having purchased counterfeits in each country. According to a previous study from June 2023, a third of Europeans consider it acceptable to buy counterfeits if the price of the authentic product is too high. This proportion reaches half among young people.
