The Histadrut demands guarantees to maintain the conditions of the workers and their occupational security following Asem’s intention to sell the intellectual property rights to its products to the Nestlé global corporation.

In a letter sent this morning by the chairman of the Food and Pharmaceutical Workers’ Union, Eliezer Blue, to the company’s management, he said that the sale means that the Nestlé Corporation will be able to establish parallel or alternative production lines for all the group’s production lines in Israel. the employment of the employees,” Blue wrote to Esem-Nestle CEO Avi Ben Esseig. “I will ask you to schedule without delay a meeting with the participation of the trade union and the group’s workers’ council. At this meeting we will ask for clarifications and commitments to maintain the collective agreements and the occupational security of the workers.”

The intention of the Nestlé Global Corporation, based in Switzerland, to buy the intellectual property rights of Asem, was published this morning (Thursday) in “Calcalist”. This means the purchase of all the rights and formulas for the brands, including Bamba, Beasley, Tivol, Materna, Salati Sabar. This is a complementary move to the purchase of all Asam shares in 2016, and its delisting.

The process of purchasing Esem’s intellectual property is expected to involve paying taxes to the State of Israel, but it will allow Nestlé to transfer the production of Bamba and Matrena, for example, to foreign countries in the future. Thus, the move will affect the bargaining power of the company vis-à-vis the State of Israel in regards to issues of government grants and taxation, but also in political aspects, such as a decision to stop producing these products in Israel as part of moves against the state or the government.

Esem Nestlé is one of the largest food companies in Israel, and employs approximately 4,000 workers in eight factories, many of which are in the geographic periphery: Kiryat Gat, Sderot, Yakneam, the ghetto fighters and Mebarot. This is in addition to the significant scope of its purchases from thousands of suppliers in Israel, and thousands of businesses based on its products such as restaurants, catering companies and hotels.
