Most dog owners know that their pet’s life expectancy depends on its size – small dogs live longer on average. But do they know the diseases that their dog is likely to develop as they age? In a study published Wednesday in the journal Plos One , researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle, show that body size also has an influence on the type of health problems that the animal will encounter during its life. Large dogs thus have more cancers, ENT, orthopedic, bone and skin problems, but also gastrointestinal, neurological and endocrine disorders. Small dogs are more prone to eye, heart and respiratory diseases. However, kidney and urinary infections do not seem to be linked to size.
