Clarios, a global leader in advanced low-voltage battery solutions, and Altris, a pioneer in sustainable sodium-ion battery technology, have announced the creation of an innovative partnership to develop sodium ion batteries low voltage for the automotive industry.

All vehicles, including hybrid and electric vehicles, require a low-voltage power source to power critical systems and functions. As hybrid and electric vehicles continue to evolve, the low-voltage grid must have more software-based features, such as steering and brake-by-wire, autonomous functions, and enhanced interior experiences.

This transformation is leading automakers to explore multi-battery solutions including lithium-ion batteries, AGM lead-acid batteries (with absorbent glass separator) and other chemical formulations for some of the world’s most iconic vehicles. While lead-acid batteries represent the best example of circular economy world, and lithium-based products continue to evolve, Clarios’ agnostic and circular chemistry approach has taken on strategic importance. Sodium ion (Na-ion) batteries are inherently sustainable and easy to recycle, as they are manufactured from salt, wood, iron and air.

The materials used to produce these batteries are abundant, available, and do not contain conflict minerals or toxic elements. The new joint collaboration program aims to develop a sodium ion battery with a potential of up to 60 volts for automotive applications in both new and replacement vehicles, which can also complement a low-voltage multi-battery configuration.

Clarios brings extensive experience in low voltage systems within the automotive sector and will play a key role in defining and optimizing sodium ion battery specifications.“said Federico Morales Zimmermann, vice president and GM, Global Customers, Products and Engineering at Clarios. Altris, a leading company in sodium ion cathode material and battery cell technology, will focus on the development of Na-cells. ion specifically adapted to the needs of the low-voltage automotive battery market.

Altris wants to offer better, safer and truly sustainable sodium ion batteries. We continually investigate new applications where our technology can have a significant impact on a large scale. We are therefore very pleased to partner with Clarios, who share our strong focus on ethical, social and corporate governance criteria, to develop low voltage cells for the automotive industry. With this partnership, we can access one in every three vehicles circulating in the world and accelerate the ecological transition“, stated Björn Mårlid, CEO of Altris.

The long-term goal is to develop a detailed production plan for low-voltage battery systems using these Na-ion cells. The two companies believe that mass production of Na-ion batteries would represent a major advance in automotive battery technology and an important step in supporting the automotive industry’s circularity goals.
