Next week, NATO will carry out large-scale military maneuvers, the largest in Europe “in decades”, which will involve around 90,000 soldiers and run until May. The Atlantic Alliance’s announcement is seen as a message of support for Ukraine as it continues to ask for more weapons from Western allies.

Military personnel from the organization’s 31 member states will participate in the maneuvers, but also from Sweden, which is in the accession process. In total, 90,000 soldiers will be deployed, according to the supreme commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, US General Christopher Cavoli, the Alliance will demonstrate the ability to reinforce the Euro-Atlantic zone through the transatlantic deployment of forces from North America.

“It will be a clear demonstration of our unity, our strength and our determination to protect each other, to protect our values and the rules-based international order,” added Christopher Cavoli.

NATO’s announcement was made at the end of a two-day meeting of defense officials from allied countries, held in Brussels, as the second anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches.

Ukraine has been pressuring Western allies to provide it with weapons, ammunition and financial support following the American budget impasse. NATO’s military exercise also constitutes a message of support for Ukraine, clearly directed at the Kremlin, in a logic of deterrence reminiscent of Cold War confrontations. Since the start of the large-scale Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, NATO has considerably strengthened its defenses on the eastern front, sending thousands of soldiers there.
