Mouthwash is a common step in many people’s dental cleaning routine, however there is a warning that using it may put your health at risk.

Mouthwash can help freshen breath, remove food debris and help whiten teeth, but its use can destroy friendly bacteria in the mouth and increase the risk of high blood pressure.

Hypertension

British doctor Sarmad Mazhar explained that the mouth is full of millions of bacteria, and some of these bacteria actually produce a very important chemical called nitric oxide, and when we kill them, they cause problems related to blood pressure, according to the British “Daily Mail” website.

Dr. Mezher cited a study conducted by Kaumudi Goshipura, an epidemiologist, biostatistician, and dentist, to prove this theory.

As part of the study they enrolled 1,000 candidates, about half of whom used mouthwash regularly, while the other half did not.

Heart attacks

During the study period, 12% of people developed high blood pressure, and Dr. Mezher said: “People who were taking mouthwash were twice as likely to develop high blood pressure compared to those who did not.”

He emphasized that this is very important because high blood pressure is linked to many adverse health outcomes such as heart attacks, strokes, and even vascular problems in the legs.

So these oral bacteria help lower blood pressure, not kill them, according to Dr. Mezher.
