The tomato lowers blood pressure: here are the benefits of the vegetable

I tomatoestypical vegetables of Mediterranean diet, they lower the pressure and are characterized by their high content of minerals, vitamins fat soluble and above all lycopene, a carotenoid which has been attributed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The newspaper “l’Erborista” reports it.

New evidence of effectiveness regarding the benefits of tomatoes has emerged from the analysis of the data I study Spanish on the Mediterranean diet called “Premed”, a randomized, controlled trial that evaluated the effect of an intervention based on the Mediterranean diet in subjects which presented a high cardiovascular risk.

The subdivision of the population examined based on daily tomato intake made it possible first of all to detect among the regular consumers of this vegetable a greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet and greater consumption of fruit and vegetables in the daily diet.

The analysis of the results, collected during three years of observationalso showed a linear correlation between tomato consumption and values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects with grade I hypertension.

Separate evaluation of data from only people who did not have a diagnosis of hypertension at the start of the study showed a 36% reduction of the risk of developing this disorder among those who consumed an average of 110 g of tomatoes per day.

Since this is an observational study, it is not possible to define causal relationships between food intake and health parameters, however these data suggest that tomato consumption, within the Mediterranean diet, plays a favorable role in both prevention and management of hypertension.

These protective effects appear to be correlated with the antioxidant, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory action attributed to some tomato compoundssuch as for example the lycopene and other flavonoidsascorbic acid and potassium, which has a stabilizing effect on blood pressure values.
