The Mexican government said this Monday that weapons exclusively used by the United States military are entering Mexico, amid a maelstrom of violence linked to organized crime.

“The Secretary of Defense alerted the United States about weapons that are entering Mexico, which are for the exclusive use of the US army, and it is very urgent that an investigation be carried out in this regard,” said Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena at a press conference. , without giving further details.

The chancellor stated that this was one of the topics that a delegation of Mexican officials addressed with their American counterpart last Friday the 19th in Washington, which mainly dealt with irregular migration.

The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has filed two lawsuits against American weapons manufacturing and distribution companies in federal court in Boston, and another in Tucson, Arizona.

And although the lawsuit has suffered some setbacks in court, Bárcena assured this Monday afternoon that they obtained a favorable ruling.

“The United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled in favor of Mexico in its lawsuit against weapons manufacturing companies. The matter returns to the first instance for a review of the merits of the matter,” the chancellor wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

For his part, the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said at a press conference on Monday that there is a “constant exchange” of information between both countries, and that as soon as more information about the case is known, it will be released.

“We are very focused on stopping the flow (of weapons) as best we can,” he said.

Reducing the circulation of weapons from the United States to Mexico “is a priority for President (Joe) Biden,” the ambassador continued. “We know that 70 percent of the weapons that cause violence here in Mexico come from the United States.”
