A group of 39 Haitian migrants shipwrecked near the Los Farallones hotel in Cayo Santamaría, north of the province of Villa Clara, after having sailed from their country with the intention of reaching the United States.

According to a report from the official newspaper Granma, among the crew of the rustic boat were three children and five women. All were attended to after the protocol was activated by the Municipal Defense Council.

The sailboat, which ran aground at noon on the coastal edge of the Los Farallones hotel due to the bad weather prevailing in the area, represents the third event of this type in the last 18 months in the central province. Many of the Haitian migrants who leave their country aboard boats end up in Cuba due to the sea conditions.

All 38 crew members were transferred to the Willian Darías semi-boarding school in Santa Clara, according to Iván Medina Bravo, head of Red Cross operations in the province. As has happened with previous cases, now the migrants are waiting for government coordination to be returned to their country of origin. Their goal was to reach the United States, not settle in Cuba, where economic conditions are just as complex, or even worse, than in Haiti.

Other locations of Haitian migrants

Haitian migration is common, especially in eastern Cuba, due to the detour of boats in the Passage of the Winds on their route to the United States or the Bahamas. After the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, greater chaos broke out in the country, and people have seen the solution to their problems in fleeing their homeland.

At the end of May 2022, 842 Haitian migrants arrived on the coast of the Villa Clara municipality of Caibarién. The same situation was repeated a few days later, in the month of June, when another 178 people arrived in a nearby area. In both cases, the migrants stated that their intention was not to arrive in Cuba, which is why their arrival was erroneous.

According to statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) about similar events in the past, Cuba’s policy is to manage the safe and voluntary return of Haitian migrants who arrive in the national territory through different provinces in the center and east of the country.
