Intel’s Arrow Lake Processors: Thunderbolt 5 and PCIe 5.0 Support Coming Soon

Intel is preparing to launch new Arrow Lake desktop processors later this year, and according to the latest leaks, these processors will come with support for Thunderbolt 5 and PCIe 5.0 speeds.

Thunderbolt 4 processors support transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, while Thunderbolt 5 processors support transfer speeds of up to 120 Gbps.

However, Thunderbolt 5 processors support these speeds in only one direction, as they are designed to connect external displays. It also delivers transfer speeds of up to 80 Gbps in both directions over four PCIe 4.0 lanes, making it twice as fast as Thunderbolt 4 processors.

Thunderbolt 5 processors are currently only available in some 14th generation Intel Core H processors, so its arrival in Arrow Lake processors will be the first time it will be available in desktop processors.

In addition to Thunderbolt 5 support, the leaks also indicate that Intel will add 20 lanes of PCIe 5.0 to Arrow Lake processors. This is important because it will allow 16 lanes to be connected to the GPU and four lanes to the fifth-generation SSD, allowing both components to operate at full bandwidth.

With Raptor Lake processors, there are 16 PCIe Gen 5 lanes for the GPU but only PCIe 4.0 lanes for the SSD. This was fine in 2023, but 5th generation SSDs will start to become more widespread in the future, so Intel has good timing here.

Arrow Lake processors are the next generation of desktop processors after Alder Lake and Raptor Lake processors, and they are very important processors.
