The Global Coalition for Social Justice attracts its first 100 members

© OIT GENEVA (ILO News) – The Global Coalition for Social Justice, an innovative cooperation initiative to address social justice deficits, now has 100 partners.

The coalition aims to enhance global collaboration to address social justice gaps and advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Decent Work Agenda. Through knowledge sharing and advocacy, the ILO initiative seeks to reduce global inequalities, alleviate poverty and meet essential needs, by promoting international labor standards and social dialogue.

“We have a unique opportunity to direct history towards social justice, for a world in which everyone can realize their potential and enjoy the benefits of economic, environmental and social progress. Social justice is at the heart of our mandate at the ILO, and I am truly pleased to share that, in just two months, we have been able to bring together so many partners from all sectors to achieve social justice,” said ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

To date, 19 governments, 14 employers’ and 30 workers’ organizations, 11 international organizations and financial institutions, as well as 10 regional entities, 12 international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), 3 businesses and 1 academic institution have joined the Coalition. , established by the ILO Governing Body in November 2023. The Coalition has also garnered the support of numerous Heads of State, government officials and world leaders, including the Secretary-General of the United Nations, especially in the World Labor Summit 2023: Social justice for all.

On 20 February 2024, World Day of Social Justice, the ILO will organize global online events to raise awareness and advocate for achieving a greater balance between the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Prominent figures from the world of work, politics, international and regional organizations and academia will come together to discuss achieving global social justice. The agenda includes addressing the most pressing challenges and formulating viable strategies to improve progress on the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Decent Work Agenda.

The Coalition is a voluntary platform open to governments, employers, worker organizations, international entities, financial institutions, businesses, INGOs and academia committed to advancing social justice and shared goals. It leverages partners’ strengths and priorities, fostering political commitments and practical actions aligned with national priorities.

Joining the Coalition provides partners with greater visibility of the social justice aspects of their mandates. Collaborative efforts enable greater impact and scale, enabling outcomes that would otherwise be unattainable individually, such as improved access to healthcare, quality education and decent work, resulting in better employment opportunities, nutrition and education for workers and their families.
