I’m Aryna Sabalenka e Qinwen Zheng the finalists of the Australian Open women’s tournament. The reigning champion on one side, the Chinese surprise on the other. Sabalenka and Zheng overtook the American respectively Gauff and Ukraine Yastremska. Like eleven years ago, there will be a final between a Belarusian defending the title (then Vika Azarenka) and a Chinese woman in her first Slam final (then Li Na).

It took Sabalenka one hour and 42 minutes to beat Coco Gauff, n. 4 in the world, thus avenging the defeat in the final at the US Open last September. A growing match for Sabalenka who, after experiencing some difficulties in the first set (especially in the net game), she went up in strength in the second set with powerful shots and speed in baseline exchanges. However, Gauff’s performance needs to be reviewed as he struggled especially on serve with 8 double faults, just 57% of first serves and only 39% of points with second serves. For Sabalenka it is the third Slam final in his career and he gets there without losing a set in the six matches played so far.

After Li Na, present in Melbourne both as a spectator and as a player in the legends doubles, China has found a new rising star in women’s tennis. This is Qinwen Zheng, born in 2002, in the first Slam final of his career. The 21-year-old from Shiyan (a municipality in the province of Hubei where Li Na also comes from) eliminated the surprise Dayana Yastremska, coming from the qualifiers, with a double 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes. At 21 years and 109 days, Zheng became the second youngest Asian to reach a final in the Open Era after Naomi Osaka (in the final at the 2018 US Open at 20 years and 325 days).
