The train drivers’ strike in Germany, which began at 2 a.m. on Wednesday for passenger transport, will end earlier than expected, AFP learned this Saturday from sources close to the negotiations.

The strike will end on Monday at 2 a.m. and not at 6 p.m. as initially planned, employers and union having decided to resume negotiations. These negotiations are expected to last five weeks and for the duration of the discussions, until March 3, no strike is expected. This period could be extended, indicate the same sources.

Fourth strike since November

This strike is the fourth since November 2023, against the backdrop of blocked negotiations between German railways, Deutsche Bahn or DB, and the locomotive drivers’ union (GDL).

GDL is demanding wage increases to compensate for inflation and a move to a 35-hour week over four days, compared to the current 38 hours a week. The latest offer from the public company concerns 37 hours per week for the same salary – or an additional salary increase of 2.7% for those who keep the same hourly volume.
