Xavi Hernández will not continue on the Barça bench once this season ends. After the match against Villarreal, which ended with a 3-5 defeat for the Catalans, the coach of the Catalans has confirmed that he will leave once he finishes this season.

This is what he said before the media: “I want to announce that on June 30 I will not continue as Barça coach.”

“I had decided a few days ago, but I think it’s time. The club needs a change of dynamic,” he continued.

And he continues: “As a culé, when I think about the club, about the players… they will be calmer. It’s common sense. Thinking about the club, more than about me.”

“I want to thank the president for his trust. The president is horrible… but I think my project as a coach has to end on June 30,” insists Xavi.

“I feel the most responsible”

Because he sees himself as the “most responsible”: “That’s how I feel. Good work has been done, but… I think this is going to de-escalate the general situation.”

“I have thought about the club. In some way, I have freed myself. I want the best for the club, and the best thing is that it does not continue on June 30,” he says.

“If the Champions League is won…”

Whatever happens, even if he wins the Champions League, is not going to change his mind: “I hope it happens, but I’m not going to change my mind.”

Xavi also confirms that he has not yet spoken to his players: “I haven’t told them. I’ve seen them screwed. They don’t deserve what we’re going through.”

In that sense, he insists on his decision even having won today: “Maybe I would have said it the following week. I had decided on it for a long time.”

“There is not going to be a Ferguson at Barça”

“Being Barça’s coach is a sensation… It’s a terrible drain on mental health, on your state of mind. To the point where you say it doesn’t make sense to continue,” he explains.

And he leaves a sentence: “It is impossible for there to be a Ferguson at Barça. It has happened to all the coaches who have been at the club.”

Meeting with the board after the game

Once the match against Villarreal finished, as reported by Marc Núñez, journalist from ‘El Chiringuito’, Xavi met for several minutes with Joan Laporta. As we left it, the press conference for the announcement arrived. Of the coach’s decision not to continue on the Barça bench once this season ends.
