Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week takes place each year from November 18 to 24. This year’s theme, “Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance Together,” aims to increase awareness and understanding of antibiotic resistance and promote One Health best practices to reduce the emergence and spread. of drug-resistant infections. Antimicrobial resistance not only affects humans, but also animals, plants and the environment.

Furthermore, coinciding with World Awareness Week, on the 18th the European Day for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics is celebrated.

Antibiotics do not cure infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or flu, and are only effective against bacterial infections. Overuse or incorrect use of antimicrobials can cause bacteria to become resistant to these medications, so they lose their effectiveness and infections become more difficult to cure. Therefore, it is important to always follow the recommendations of a healthcare professional about when and how to take antibiotics.

To raise awareness among the entire population about the proper use of antibiotics, the National Antibiotic Resistance Plan (PRAN) has recently launched the campaign “Antibiotics, protecting us is your job. Yours, use them well.”

At the regional level, in Aragon the Comprehensive Program for Surveillance and Control of Infections Related to Health Care and Optimization of the Use of Antibiotics (IRASPROA) is developed with the objectives of reducing the incidence of infections related to health care and optimizing the use of antimicrobials.
