As of this Monday, January 22, county public transport has become paid again, although not very expensive yet. What has changed for passengers, and what should they pay attention to first?

Narvskaya Gazeta spoke with the head of the Ida-Viru Public Transport Center (IVÜTK) Heiki Luts. Has the number of passengers on county lines decreased after January 22? According to Luts, IVÜTK will prepare a qualitative analysis of passenger flows in three weeks, but so far no decline has been observed, except for teachers and schoolchildren from those Ida-Virus schools that took part in the teachers’ strike.

Unified cards are being used more and more often

The price of travel on public transport is now two euros if you buy a ticket from the driver, and 1.5 euros if you validate your travel card. The long-familiar Ühiskaart – unified travel cards for public transport, which are valid in Narva, Tallinn, and Tartu, can also be validated on county buses, and this is the most convenient way of travel.

“I am sure that passengers also understand this; every day more and more people are validating cards,” he noted.

Heiki Luts draws attention to the fact that in county transport the right to free travel for children and young people up to 19 years of age inclusive and for passengers over the age of 63 is retained; for people with moderate, severe and profound disabilities; for people with partial or complete lack of ability to work and for several other categories of beneficiaries, which can be read in more detail on the IVÜTK website.

Passengers eligible for free travel based on age only need to personalize their Ühiskaart and the benefits will be automatically applied to them.

Passengers with disabilities, partially or completely disabled, have the opportunity to transfer the travel discount to their personal Ühiskaart, so that the right to free travel is immediately visible to the bus driver without presenting additional documents. Passengers who have benefits due to health conditions or partial or total disability can register their right to free travel in their personal Ühiskaart by contacting IVÜTK and submitting an application and documents confirming their right to benefit. This must be done before March 1st.

During the transition period, in order to receive disability-related discounts, you can also present the bus driver with a document confirming the receipt of the discount, on the basis of which the bus driver will issue a paper ticket worth 0 euros.

“In Ida-Viru County, county transport is cheaper than in some other counties. I think it should remain that way, because many of our passengers cannot afford more expensive tickets.

Money must be deposited onto a non-personalized single card to purchase a ticket, since you cannot travel for free with a non-personalized card.

For 1.5 euros you can travel from Narva to Jõhvi

The head of IVÜTK draws attention to the fact that for all other passengers, a standard ticket for 1.5 euros, purchased using a single travel card, is valid for one and a half hours of the first validation. This makes it possible, for example, to travel for just one and a half euros from Narva to Jõhvi, Pühtitsa or Toila, if the entire journey with transfers took no more than an hour and a half. The single card must be re-validated when entering the next bus line.

County transit riders can also purchase one-day tickets or 30-day passes, which is convenient for those who rely on county transit for their daily commute.

Ticket price for 1 day – so-called. a day ticket costs 4.50 euros; the ticket can be purchased using a single card electronically or at ticket sales points. When entering the bus, you must validate a single card in order to receive the right to travel.

The price of a 30-day ticket is 25 euros, the same rules apply when purchasing it.

One-day and 30-day tickets can be purchased online at www.pilet.ee (or maakonnad.pilet.ee), at Cargobus, Omniva, Selver, Prisma and R-Kiosk sales points, Maxima XX.

As we can see, although county transport has become paid, this change will not yet place a heavy burden on the wallets of passengers.

However, what will happen next, and will we see an increase in the cost of county transport in the near future? It depends on the politicians, the head of IVÜTK noted. “Yes, county transport in Ida-Viru County is cheaper than in some other counties.

I think it should remain that way, because many of our passengers cannot afford more expensive tickets,” says Heiki Lutz.

He added that in the near future the Center will work to make travel on county transport more convenient and encourage private car owners to use public transport.
