A New York jury has convicted the former US president Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million in compensation for defaming the writer Jean Carroll. But who is Jean Carroll and why will she receive this huge compensation?
The Carroll case
In 2019, when he was in the White House, Donald Trump denied having sexually assaulted Jean Carroll, as she claimed, almost 30 years earlier in a luxury department store in New York. Jean Carroll had asked for 24 million. This is the second civil conviction after that of last May, when the former president of the United States of America was found responsible for the same violence, as well as defamation, and forced to pay 5 million dollars.
The New York judges have decided that Donald Trump, the first name in the running for the Republicans for the next elections, will have to pay 18.3 million danni defined “compensators” (due to emotional stress and damage to reputation and, therefore, loss of earnings) and another 65 million in damages “punitive”as a deterrent against further defamation.

Donald Trump’s reaction to the conviction
On the social network ‘Truth’, the former president of the United States of America Donald Trump reacted harshly to the conviction.
Her words: “Absolutely ridiculous! I completely disagree with both verdicts and will appeal this entire Biden-directed witch hunt targeting me and the Republican Party. Our legal system is out of control and is being used as a political weapon. They have eliminated all First Amendment Rights. This is not America!”.
The tycoon has also already announced that he will present appeal against the verdict which he called “ridiculous”.
