She’s on the go a lot these days. Zaklin Nastic, member of the Bundestag and former left-wing politician, is one of the founding members of the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party. It is intended to set up the Hamburg regional association.

This means she has to have conversations with potential supporters. Nastic tells the Hamburg Journal on NDR television that it is important to get to know people. “We want to work with people who are really passionate about our political priorities.”

BSW wants to grow slowly in Hamburg

The motto is to grow slowly. The party will probably not take part in the district elections in June this year. The time until then is too short, says Nastic. A state statute and candidates are needed. Nastic: “Before we get ahead of ourselves, we would rather have a good campaign for the European elections and for the general election.” The latter will take place in 2025.

Political mix convinces Joachim Witt

The new party led by Sahra Wagenknecht is considered to be more left-wing in terms of economic policy, but rather conservative in terms of socio-policy. She wants a climate policy with technical innovations instead of an end to combustion engines, no arms deliveries to Ukraine and less migration. This convinced the Hamburg musician Joachim Witt, who once became famous with the hit “Goldener Reiter”. He is one of the first BSW members. Witt: “It’s a political mixture that has never been seen in this form before. And I haven’t felt at home anywhere before. This is the first time that I can say from my gut: that’s exactly it.”

Political scientist sees good opportunities

The BSW appeals to voters from a wide range of parties, says political scientist Elmar Wiesendahl. He sees a good chance that the new party will succeed in breaking into the citizenry in the coming year. Wiesendahl: “We’re not in a good situation. We have the rent explosion, we hardly have any buildings left, we have a crisis in the port. So we have a situation where this comfortable feeling from the people of Hamburg – “we’re doing well” – is with us There is a big question mark on it. And if this takes hold, then the SPD will make significant losses and it will not be the Greens who will win, but the Wagenknecht party.”

The chances would be even better in the European elections. It is the first test for the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance before it comes to the Hamburg town hall.
