On October 16, the vaccination campaign against flu and COVID began in Aragon (having started on the 2nd for people living in residential centers, and for children under 5 years of age). The fundamental objective of the campaign is to protect from the disease those people with a greater probability of complications due to age or previous pathologies.

Currently, vaccination against flu and COVID is recommended for the following target population groups:

A. Due to the greater risk of complications or serious conditions:

  • People 60 years or older.
  • People (from 5 years old) who live in residences, disability centers or other types of closed institutions.
  • People under 60 years of age with risk conditions (due to diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, immunosuppressed…)
  • Pregnant women in any trimester of pregnancy and women during the postpartum period (up to 6 months after giving birth and who have not been vaccinated during pregnancy).
  • People living with those who have a high degree of immunosuppression.

B. To reduce the impact and maintenance of critical and essential services to the community:

  • Staff from public and private healthcare and socio-health centers (both healthcare and non-healthcare, except students for whom flu vaccination is only recommended).
  • People who work in essential public services, such as State security forces and bodies (national, regional or local), firefighters, Civil Protection…

Regarding flu vaccination, this year the campaign has two notable novelties since, in addition to the traditional groups to which this campaign is directed, it includes the child population between 6 and 59 months of age (under 5 years ) and smokers.

Thus, the target population group to receive the flu vaccine includes:

  • People ages 5 to 59 who are at increased risk of flu complications:
  • People 5-18 years of age who receive prolonged treatment with acetylsalicylic acid, due to the possibility of developing Reye’s syndrome after the flu.
  • Smokers.
    • Students in internships in health and social health centers.
    • People with direct occupational exposure to animals or their secretions on poultry, swine or mink farms or farms or to wildlife (birds, wild boars or mustelids)
    • Child population between 6-59 months of age. Children under 2 years of age will be administered an intramuscular injection and from the age of two they will be vaccinated through an intranasal dose.

Vaccines are safe, lives are saved every year thanks to them. Therefore, it is important that health personnel get vaccinated and recommend them according to the vaccination schedule. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself but you help protect the rest of the population.
