England’s teenage team, the winners of the Senior World Cup, made their dramatic debut in the final. The Afghan pacers struggled but England faltered as the spinners came on the scene. England were unable to score runs and lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener George Thomas (50) hit a fifty but England’s position was in jeopardy. Alex Horton’s explosive batting at number eight saved England from collapse. Horton and George Bell scored the most runs in the final spell of the pacers as the spinners cleared the field. They put on an unbeaten 95 off just 72 balls for the seventh wicket. Bell (56) and Horton (53 off 36 balls) were not out.
In reply, the Afghans lost the first wicket by one run on the scoreboard, but a 93-run stand between Alla Noor (60) and Mohammad Ishaq (43) for the second wicket gave them hope. However, the Afghans collapsed when the two were eliminated. Many players got off to a good start but no one was able to reach the top score later. Rehan Ahmad, who took 4 wickets, smashed the Afghan chase.
