Decision time: 4 Israeli surfers will compete in the World Championship for the Olympic ticket to Paris

The IQ Foil Windsurfing World Championship kicks off today (Monday) in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. In the women’s team, the top four sailors come to the competition: Shahar Tibi, Sharon Kantor, Kati Spichkov and Tamar Steinbergwho will compete among themselves for the Israeli ticket to the Paris 2024 games.

During the past year, the Israeli Sailing Association marked four target competitions in which the Israeli representative who will receive the ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris will be determined: the pre-Olympic competition, the World Championship and the European Championship in 2023 and the World Championship in 2024, in which points will be accumulated for each of the athletes according to their position in the competition. In men, the four senior sailors will compete for the Olympic ticket: Yoav Omar, Tom Reuveni, Yoav Cohen and Tomer Vardimon.

Everything is still open in the women’s team, where during the World Championship you can earn up to 50 points. Winning the gold medal is worth 40 points, silver 35 points and bronze 30 points. Finishing between fourth and eighth places will award between 25 and 5 points. Places 9-16 will be unscored. Where those who finish places 17-24 will receive a 5 point reduction and any lower place will result in a 10 point reduction. The methods will also be scored for placement in the qualifiers. Finishing in first place in the qualifiers is worth 10 points. Second and third places are worth 5 points.

Sharon Kantor currently leads the internal ranking with 56 points. World champion Shahar Tibi is in second place with 55 points. Kati Spichkov is third with 41 points and Tamar Steinberg with a theoretical chance to be considered a surprise with 22 points.

Israel’s women’s team is the best team in the world with one or more surfers who make it to the podium in every competition, even in the most important competitions such as the world championships and the European championships and with four or even five competitors in the top ten.

During the round to Paris 2024, Kantor won the second place in the 2023 European Championship and the gold medal in the pre-Olympic competition. Tibi Asher, who appeared in the Tokyo 2020 Games as part of the 470 team together with Noya Bar, will try to reach her second Olympics, after returning to the sport in which she began her career. Tibi won the last world championship in that she became only the third surfer after Gal Friedman and Lee Korzitz to win the world title.

Kati Spichkov, who trains separately from the team, won the silver medal at the last World Championship. Her third world silver medal win, having done so in 2019 and 2021 in the previous model Neil Pride RS:X. Spichkov represented Israel at the Tokyo Olympics and finished in sixth place.

The fourth leg in the race is 17-year-old Tamar Steinberg, who has not yet won a senior medal but is considered a huge talent and has won the world championships for girls and the Israeli championship for seniors and will be more dominant in the campaign for Los Angeles 2028.

At the end of the competition, the final score will be recalculated. If the score is close, the national coach Shahar Tzuberi can recommend to the committee the best competitor for him for the Paris 2024 Games. In addition, if Sharon Kantor wins a medal at the World Championships, she will receive the gold score after winning the gold medal in the pre-Olympic competition and should automatically be Israel’s representative in Paris.
