His season is over after the crash in Wengen. Aleksander Kilde suffered a deep cut in his lower leg and a dislocated shoulder. After the operation, the Norwegian reported: “I have never experienced pain like this before.”

He also wrote on his Instagram profile about the upcoming phase of recovery: “It will be a challenge.” Now he described for the first time how this manifested itself in the first two weeks since his fall. He also attached some pictures and videos to the post, showing, among other things, his injuries. (Warning: The fourth image and the following video are not for the faint of heart.)

At first he had major problems with even the simplest things. In the first week, he passed out on the way to the toilet and suffered a panic attack as a result of the painkillers he had to take every hour.

This is what Kilde wrote about week one after the fall

  • “I tried to go to the bathroom once and passed out.”
  • “Painkillers every hour.”
  • «Transportation by helicopter from Bern to Innsbruck (I’m so grateful to be closer to home)»
  • “Successful shoulder surgery – both arthroscopic and open methods – to repair my entire rotator cuff and capsule. It turned out that there was a lot more broken than just two tapes.”
  • «Definitely the worst pain I have ever felt after surgery. And then I had a panic attack from the painkillers.”
  • “Lots of anatomy lessons.”

But in the last week he was feeling a little better. At least he was able to sit upright for ten minutes without losing consciousness and go to the toilet alone, as he writes. He was also allowed to leave the hospital on Friday and go back to Innsbruck. Although he can’t move his toes yet, he is happy about these small steps.

This is what Kilde wrote about week two after the fall

  • “I sat upright for more than ten minutes without losing consciousness.”
  • “I was able to go to the toilet alone again.”
  • “Went outside for the first time in two weeks.”
  • “Preparing for seven weeks in a wheelchair.”
  • “Spend quality time with my parents.”
  • “Video call with Mikaela Shiffrin.”
  • “I tried another painkiller, which provided immediate relief.”
  • “On Wednesday I showered for the first time in two weeks.”
  • “On Friday I was finally able to leave the hospital and go home.”
  • “I was recovering from shoulder surgery.”
  • “I still can’t lift my toes, but the doctor has told me that he expects a full recovery of mobility in my leg from the nerve damage.”

The 31-year-old is still a long way from returning to skiing, but the healing process seems to be going well. And he may soon get additional support. His girlfriend Mikaela Shiffrin also crashed in Cortina and is out for the time being. The exact severity of the injury is not yet known. (nih)

The Ticino native is currently 195 points short of the big star in the ski circus. Will you even be able to repeat the great triumph from 2016?

Lara Gut-Behrami didn’t really want to talk about it at the weekend in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Too much had happened. The many falls and the long interruptions had taken too much of a toll on them. It was all very intense, said the Ticino woman after the races in South Tyrol.
