The Cultural Department of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista will hold, on February 6th, at 7:10 pm, a ceremony in honor of the 70th anniversary of winning the IV Centenary cup, one of the most iconic titles in Corinthians history, as it refers to the celebration of 400 years of anniversary of the City of São Paulo. The cup was secured after the 1-1 draw at Derby, on February 6, 1955. Much sought after by clubs at the time, the 1954 Paulistão was called “The title that is valid for 100 years”.

The conquest of the Campeonato Paulista do IV Centenário was one of the most important in the history of the Parque São Jorge club, crowning one of the most victorious generations of Timão which, in five years, was champion of three Rio-São Paulo tournaments (1950, 1953 and 1954) and three Paulistas (1951, 1952 and 1954).

In the decision, Corinthians entered the field with Gilmar; Homer and Alan; Idário, Goiano and Roberto; Cláudio, Luizinho, Baltazar, Rafael and Simão, team led by coach Oswaldo Brandão. Timão’s goal was scored by Luizinho, the team’s top scorer at the time, with a header after a cross from Cláudio.

“President Augusto Melo was very happy to state that it is the right of Corinthians fans to know their history. And this event is one of our actions to achieve this goal”, highlights the director of the Cultural Department, Raul Corrêa da Silva. “Among the missions of the Corinthians Cultural Department is to transmit our history, values, culture and traditions to new generations, as well as the importance of our achievements and, thus, perpetuate Corinthianism”, he adds.

The club’s campaign in 1954 was overwhelming. In the 26 games of that championship, there were 18 wins, six draws and two defeats. After the 1-1 draw with their biggest rival, in a majestic match, Timão still scored 3-1 in the final game, which only served to fulfill the schedule. Luizinho was the competition’s top scorer, with 14 goals.

To consolidate the tribute, the club asks athletes, families of athletes who participated in the victorious campaign, as well as the technical committee and management at the time and family members, to get in touch to confirm their presence at the event. “It is an honor to welcome the heroes and their families of such an iconic achievement to our memorial, in addition to watching the historic events of this battle”, adds the club’s researcher, Fernando Wanner.

The tribute, on February 6, 2024, will be at 7:10 pm at Memorial Corinthians, free entry. Confirmation of the presence of family members of the team, committee and board of directors at the time can be done via email: [email protected]. The Corinthians Memorial is located at Rua São Jorge, 777 – Tatuapé, São Paulo/SP.
