They wrote in an e-mail to VG on Wednesday that “there are very few people who are buried at the state’s expense”.

«The decision is taken by the Prime Minister in consultation with relevant ministers. Alternatives to a funeral at the state’s expense could be that the government is represented at the funeral and sends a wreath», it says further.

Lillebjørn Falk Nilsen fell asleep quietly on Saturday evening, January 27, with his loved ones around him.

It is not yet known when and where Nilsen will be buried.

Burial at the state’s expense is given to people who have made an outstanding and completely special effort for the country or for Norwegian society. There are no fixed rules for who is buried at the state’s expense.

Around 100 people have been buried at the state’s expense since the scheme was introduced in 1881.

The last person to be buried at the state’s expense was writer and social debater Shabana Rehman.

Lillebjørn Nilsen stayed in 2022 knighted of the 1st class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, for his efforts for vice culture. He has also won a number of prestigious awards for his music.

“Children of the rainbow” took on new meaning for the people after 22 July. Here 40,000 sing the song at Youngstorget:
