37 thousand cars in one month is a huge number for the Israeli car market. But in January of the last few years, the car importers settled for a similar figure only in 2022, the year of the severe shortage of chips, the severe slowdown due to problems in the supply chain and a mysterious failure in the licensing office’s computers.

To put data into perspective: last year in January over 47,000 new cars were sold, while in 2021 there were over 48,000, and in 2020 about 42,000 new cars were still registered at the licensing office. The last time fewer cars were sold in January – over 36 thousand – was in 2016

Among the car importers there were – admittedly few – who believed that despite the war, the general slowdown in the market and the national mood which is at a low ebb, the numbers would be as high as last year’s. Most importers, on the other hand, estimated that the delivery data would show a considerable slowdown, but not to that extent.

The strongest brand in January was of course Hyundai, with about 5,600 new cars. A figure that expresses a decrease of tens of percent compared to January of last year when more than 8,400 new cars were delivered by the Korean brand. Kia, in second place, also recorded a decrease, but much more moderate, with 4,700 new cars compared to about 5,000 last year. In third place is the first representative from China, BYD, which is also responsible for the best-selling car last year (Eto 3). About 3,300 cars were delivered from the brand – the only one among the top ten exhibitors – of about 10 percent compared to January ’23.

Toyota is fourth in the ranking with about 3,000 cars, similar to last year, and it is ahead of Mazda, which records the biggest drop among the top ten brands – from about 4,600 to 2,700 new cars. Other notable declines belong to the three Chinese Geely, MG and Chery, as well as the Japanese Subaru and Seat, which lost almost two-thirds of deliveries compared to January last year.

The electric vehicles are of course owned by BYD with all the cars in Samsara (3,300), three Magili Shacharya with about 1,100 cars. In third place is MG with about 700 new electric cars, before Hyundai with almost 600 electric cars, SRS with about 400 VAXFNG with about 300.

Among the luxury brands, Mercedes delivered about 500 cars, a decrease of tens of percent compared to last year, BMW a similar number and Audi, which for years led the category, is satisfied with about 400 new cars in January.
