Violet UV index alert in much of Uruguay

The Meteorological Institute has declared the maximum alert level, represented by the color violet, warning of extremely high radiation that can cause burns to unprotected skin or eyes in a matter of minutes. Given this critical situation, the population is urged to follow strict precautions to preserve their health.

The institute’s recommendations are clear: avoid sun exposure during the most intense hours, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. It is advisable to wear clothing that covers the skin, sunglasses and apply sunscreen to minimize the risk of damage from radiation.

The Brazilian meteorological agency, Metsul, has explained that this unprecedented heat wave is linked to what they call a “heat dome”, a phenomenon that has established itself over central South America. This climatic condition will bring with it a prolonged sequence of days with excessively high temperatures in central and northern Argentina, also extending to Uruguay.

The concept of “dome” or “heat bubble” is characterized by areas of high pressure with descending air that compresses the air on the surface, generating a significant increase in temperature, as detailed by the meteorological agency. This phenomenon, also known as a “heat dome,” occurs when an area of high pressure persists over the same region for days or weeks, trapping extremely hot air beneath it.
