Specific formulas and materials must be used in the sacrament, otherwise the sacrament becomes invalid. Note of the Faith Affairs Committee “Jestis Verbisquae”.
Joey Kariveli, Vatican City
The Department for Religious Affairs has issued an official note stating that any change in the sacramental formulas and sacramentals will invalidate the sacrament.
The note, with the Latin title “Gestis verbisque” (Gestis verbisque), was issued on Saturday (03/02/24) by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, President of the Congregation for the Faith, and Monsignor Armando Mateo, the Curator, have signed this note approved by Pope Francis on January 31 this year (31/01/24).
This lengthy note makes it clear that the prescribed formulas and materials for the administration of the sacrament may not be changed at will under the guise of creativity, and to do so renders the sacrament void, i.e., no such sacrament has taken place.
This note is not merely a matter of technicality or “expediency” but rather clearly expresses the priority of God’s work and humbly preserves the unity of Christ’s church.
