The successful streak of the second division soccer team Eintracht Braunschweig is over. After four wins in a row, the Lower Saxony team had to admit defeat 0-1 (0-0) in the basement duel at FC Schalke 04 on Saturday.

It has been almost exactly two months since Eintracht coach Daniel Scherning’s team lost a game: on December 2nd they lost 1-0 in the home game against Greuther Fürth. After that, BTSV rushed from one victory to the next – until this Saturday. The hoped-for jump to a non-relegation zone did not materialize on matchday 20.

“It’s extremely bitter and feels a bit undeserved because at least one point was possible. Unfortunately, we didn’t finish it with enough determination today,” said Eintracht goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann in an interview with NDR.

Braunschweig starts strong…

The “Lions”, whose left-back Anderson Lucoqui, signed from Hertha BSC, was not yet in the squad, started very confidently and put Schalke under pressure early in the build-up to the game. The guests tried particularly on the right wing and had a good opportunity in the second minute. After a cross from Fabio Kaufmann, Johan Gomez came a step too late at the front post.

The chance was even better after a quarter of an hour: The fast Rayan Philippe started at exactly the right moment with a fine free kick from the outside of the foot on the left side, took the ball down technically cleanly with his instep while sprinting and then immediately passed it diagonally into the path of Gomez . But at the last moment, Schalke’s Derry Murkin slipped the ball into the goal.

… and got lucky before the break

Only: the balance of power turned in Gelsenkirchen’s favor. A good save from Marcim Kaminski prevented Hoffmann from going behind (20′), and a powerful shot from Kenan Karaman hit the crossbar (34′). There was nothing offensive from Braunschweig in the further course of the first half, which was mainly due to the fact that their own transition game had lost speed and accuracy. We went into the break with the score 0-0.

Schalke’s Karaman decides the game

Too hesitant defensive behavior meant that the North Germans fell behind in the 61st minute. After Robin Krauße failed to prevent a through pass to Karaman, Braunschweig veteran Ermin Bicakcic kept too much distance from the Schalke offensive player in the penalty area. Karaman didn’t take long to ask and shot into the bottom left corner – 1-0 for the Royal Blues.

“I’m still almost there – it’s already bitter.”

Eintracht goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann

Keeper Hoffmann didn’t blame Bicakcic: “Karaman is one on one with him, runs at full speed, which is extremely difficult to defend. I’m still almost there – it’s bitter. But I think we reacted well afterwards have.”

Braunschweig then tried everything to get at least one point in the duel with a competitor to stay in the league. But Lower Saxony simply wasn’t able to overcome Schalke’s defense.
