Eighth title for Teddy Riner in Paris. The Frenchman, triple Olympic gold medalist, won this Sunday in the Paris Grand Slam at the Accor Arena, dominating the South Korean Kim Min-jong in the final. A victory which makes him the most successful judoka in the history of this competition. A way to reaffirm his weight in the + 100 kg category for his first individual outing since his eleventh world champion title in May in Doha.
If the Frenchman suffered a scare by being knocked down and conceding a waza-ari in the semi-final against Uzbek Alisher Yusupov, he more mastered his final against Kim Min-jong. The French judo star won the golden score to win a new gold medal in the capital. “We’re still here,” he smiles at the microphone of the L’Equipe channel.
Second gold medal on Sunday after Romane Dicko
Four other French people distinguished themselves this Sunday. In the -78 kg category, Madeleine Malonga won a nice bronze medal, beating her compatriot Audrey Tcheuméo in the process. Beaten in the semi-final, Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou won his fight for third place against the Hungarian Ustopiriyon to also grab a podium, just like Léa Fontaine, who beat the Turkish Hilal Ozturk. Finally, Romane Dicko won the title at + 78 kg in a final completed in 40 seconds.
