Gampam: It has been reported that the Power Board is planning to conduct a study on the possibilities of generating electricity using the water in the dams in Theni district.

Electricity is produced in many ways including hydro, coal, nuclear and wind. It is necessary to carry out power generation to meet the growing population’s needs.

170 MW of electricity is generated by 4 generators in the district by drawing water from the Mullaip Periyar dam. 35 MW of electricity is produced by a generator taking water from the Iravankalaru dam.

Apart from this, low megawatt power generation is taking place through micro power plants at places like Guruvanoothu Bridge, Kullappakundanpatti and Vaigai Dam in Mullai Periyar.

At present, excluding these places, Shanmukha Nadi Dam has a capacity of 52.5 feet, Manchalaru Dam has a capacity of 57 feet, Chothupparai Dam has a capacity of 126 feet.

The Power Board has decided to study the feasibility of power generation in these 3 dam areas. The power board officials said that a study would be started soon to see if it could be set up like the one at Waikai Dam or if there are potential components for generating additional megawatts of power.
