Yule wins the Chamonix slalom ahead of Meillard after starting the second run from 30th place.

The podium

Sheer madness in Chamonix: Daniel Yule and Loïc Meillard ensure the first Swiss double victory in the slalom since 1978 and Martial Donnet and Peter Lüscher in Madonna di Campiglio (ITA). Yule is also the first slalom skier in the history of the World Cup to move from 30th to 1st place.

For only the third time in his career, Yule opened a second run – and resolutely took advantage of the perfect conditions. One driver after the other failed because of the time of the Swiss, who had by far the best second running time. Meillard came closest to his teammate, jumping from 5th to 2nd place and thus perfecting the Swiss day of joy.

7th World Cup victory for Yule

After Meillard, neither the two Norwegians Atle Lie McGrath and Timon Haugan nor the three-time season winner Manuel Feller were able to displace the Swiss duo.

Half-time leader Clément Noël once again put Yule’s best time to the test, but fell just behind Meillard in third place. The Frenchman was 1.93 seconds ahead of Yule.

Yule had to worry about a place in the second race for a long time. After a major mistake in the first run, he lost a lot of time and fell further and further behind. By 5 (!) hundredths it was still enough for the second round – and ultimately for his 7th World Cup victory.

The other Swiss in the points

For Ramon Zenhäuser there was no fairy tale like Yule’s or his from last year when he won in Chamonix. The Valais native, who has recently been on the podium three times in a row in the French winter sports resort, is still not getting up to speed this season and had to make do with 17th place, just ahead of Marc Rochat.

The Romand had hopes of another top 10 place after the first run, but fell back from 9th to 18th in the decision.

Luca Aerni also lost a few places after an appealing first round and finished in 22nd place. Tanguy Nef secured World Cup points for the fourth time this season in 24th place.

This is how it continues

Next weekend the technicians will be at work again in Bansko (BUL). There is a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom on Sunday. A week later it is the turn of the speed riders, with a downhill and a super-G in Kvitfjell (NOR).
