A “plus ultra” alliance.- Luis Francisco Rey Arroyo

Conceived in the postwar period to protect Western Europe from the threat posed by the Soviet Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which emerged in 1949 as a cornerstone of European and North American security, has undergone significant transformations. to adapt to the geopolitical changes that have occurred throughout its seventy-five years of existence.

Although NATO’s primary mission continues to be the collective defense of the territory of its member states, to confront new threats (many of them “without borders”) and the rise of authoritarianism that seeks to establish a new world order with different values. to democracy and respect for human rights, the Atlantic Alliance has taken on the challenge of promoting international security beyond the geographical limits initially established in its founding treaty, has expanded its membership to other European countries and has established cooperative relations with partner countries in the rest of the world, becoming a regional organization with certain global responsibilities.

It therefore seems timely to study the organisation’s capacity to adapt in dealing with these threats and, at the same time, analyze its controversial progression towards a truly ‘global’ NATO.
